It’s been said that if people truly understood the first of the ten commandments, there wouldn’t be a need for the other nine. And it’s also been said that because people don’t understand the ten commandments, we now have libraries full of books with laws explaining behavior. The point being that if you can get at the essence of something, everything else flows from that essence automatically if you’re in touch with the essence. But if you can’t get in touch with the essence, then a continuous river of explanations is necessary, one after the other, after the other, after the other. The point of each explanation being to attempt to get you back to the essence. But if that one doesn’t work, then another one is needed, and another one is needed, and another one is needed, and another one is needed. And soon there are volumes and volumes and volumes, filling up libraries with explanations to the point where we have commentaries on the explanations. And we’ve gotten so far removed from the original essence of things that we’re not even talking about the essence anymore. We’re talking about why is it that men steal as opposed to why is it that men don’t understand the essential reason for being.
