People are always indicating that they would like to find peace in their lives, but they don’t seem to be able to accomplish it. Of course, people are always looking for peace in places where peace isn’t necessarily found. It sometimes seems that the American idea of peace is sitting on a beach somewhere, semi-falling asleep, with nobody to tell you to do anything and with nothing to do, as if that were where peace could be found.
Those kinds of ideas are a kind of torpor that may seem peaceful but isn’t about true peace. True peace is found through an abiity to give up everything that is within you that isn’t peaceful.
Now, that means that in order to understand peace, you also have to have a pretty good idea of what’s not peace. Not only do you have to have a pretty good idea of what’s not peace, you have to be willing to do something about the things that are not peaceful that reside within you.
